The Voice of the Ghetto
Want to follow someone who relates to and represents the masses? Then “00” is the new artist you’re checking for, revealing that the “00” in his name symbolizes “starting from scratch, coming from nothing, "I'm the third son born in a single famly home. Everything I owned was past down from older brothers, I started selling drugs when I was a teen after being put out of my mothers house. I spent most of my life at the bottom and still found away to make it out." his music wipes the hip hop slate clean, as he delivers a sound he calls Hip-Hop/Soul. Says Johnson, “I have something new, something different to bring to the table, I relate to our true roots, where we came from, you know” Ten years strong in the game, “00” first began rapping as a part of Quiet Noize, a group he created when he and junior high school friend began trading verses with each other. By 1996, Johnson’s career began to flourish when former manager Bill Blass introduced him to renowned rapper Rakim. Wowed by Doc’s material, the God repeatedly welcomed Doc“00”Johnson as his opening act throughout the next four years. It was Rakim who revealed to “00” the importance of a strong stage presence and the mechanics of moving the crowd. In 2000, Rakim left Universal to join Aftermath, prompting “00” to venture off independently, and inspiring him to start his own label, Epidemic Recordings Co. Incorporated in 2006, Epidemic has various projects underway with featured solo artists as well as his Numba Runnas crew. Since establishing Epidemic, “00” has been featured on more than 30 mixtapes, getting him heard in Germany, Amsterdam, United Kingdom, San Diego, Texas, Chicago, Canada and Indiana to name a few. As the industry begins to take note of his steady, confident flow and the way he weaves his words, hip hop fans are also turning their attention to Johnson. Employing the power of college radio promotion, he has been well received by listeners of Promo radio 247. FM and 91.3 WXAC at Albright College in Reading, PA. Moreover, Johnson has developed a fan base in Boston, MA, New Hampshire, PA, etc. as a result of linking up with local mixtape DJ’s who feature “00” on projects. Building upon his steadily increasing popularity, Johnson has released his first solo EP, Steady Cash Flow, which hit the streets spring 2009 (Rapmullet.com review “One of, if not the most slept on MC I've ever encountered, it doesn't get more authentic on the MIC than Doc OO Johnson”). The single “The Man” off the Steady Cash Flow CD has received over 30,000 views on youtube (with special appearance by The Black Panthers). Doc“00”Johnson was nominated by The Underground Music Award for Best Original Solo Artist in 2007. Recently “00” started working on his new EP “All Star Status” which is set to release late 2011 after several mix CD’s. He has paired with in-house producer DJ Homicide & new to the team is producer Charles Joseph. As far as the artist’s future plans, “00” desires to work with heavyweight producers like Kanye West, Track Runnas, and Polo da Don. “00” pulls inspiration from everyday life, during studio sessions he thoroughly acquaints himself with beats before laying down lyrics. “I believe your vocals are the last instrument added to the music, so I try to take my time and listen to the music instead of just placing anything on it,” he says, and this level of thoughtfulness in his craft imbues his music with honesty and allows him to contemplate how to make his words meaningful and impactful; because hip hop speaks of the struggles and triumphs of the people, he’s aware of how important it is that he carefully considers what he says as he speaks for many people all at once. “I like to talk about things really from a perspective of what we all have to deal with,” he says. “from the perspective of the masses rather that feel what I feel, because I know it’s a whole lot of other people who deal with the same issues… I focus more on being the voice of the people.” THE VOICE OF THE GHETTO
